Moderate to heavy caffeine consumption during pregnancy and relationship to spontaneous abortion and abnormal fetal growth: a meta-analysis.

An increase in the risk of having spontaneous abortion and low birth weight babies is associated with high intake of caffeine-containing beverages during pregnancy.

This meta-analysis studied the connection between caffeine intake and a pregnant woman's likelihood of suffering from spontaneous abortion or having a baby with low birth weight (LBW). Researchers reviewed data and evidence obtained from 32 studies.

Researchers noticed that women who consumed more than 150 mg of caffeine per day exhibited high risk of experiencing spontaneous abortion or delivering babies with low birth weight. This study adds to the existing evidence that caffeine may have a negative effect on pregnancy outcomes and fetal growth.
