Low carbohydrate-high protein diet and incidence of cardiovascular diseases in Swedish women: prospective cohort study.

High cardiovascular disease risk is associated with low carb-high protein diets.

This study evaluated how low carbohydrate-high protein diets affect cardiovascular health. Using validated dietary questionnaires, researchers examined the diets of 43,396 Swedish women between the ages of 30-49 years for 15.7 years. The relative risks of cardiovascular diseases, such as ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, hemorrhagic stroke, and peripheral arterial disease, were assessed in all the subjects.

Researchers observed a high incidence of cardiovascular diseases among subjects who frequently consumed low carbohydrate-high protein diets. The results of this study show that high consumption of diets low in carbohydrates and high in proteins may promote the development of cardiovascular diseases in healthy individuals.
