Does a high intake of green leafy vegetables protect from NAFLD? Evidence from a large population study

The tendency of developing non alcoholic fatty liver disease may be low among habitual consumers of green leafy vegetables.

This study attempted to answer the question: is frequent eating of green leafy vegetables beneficial for the prevention of non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)? With the aid of validated food frequency questionnaires, researchers assessed the dietary choices of 26,891 Chinese men and women. All the participants' non alcoholic fatty liver disease diagnosis status was obtained from their medical records.

Researchers discovered that high consumption of green leafy vegetables resulted in a significant reduction in non alcoholic fatty liver disease risk, particularly among women and in individuals with healthy weight. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that regular ingestion of green leafy vegetables may provide men and women with good protective cover against non alcoholic fatty liver disease.
